For this cherry pie recipe, I am once again hitting you with my grandmother’s pie crust recipe. If you’ve seen my pie recipes before, you’ll know that this is the only way I make my crusts. I did say that I used it for everything.
These are so simple to make and are absolutely fool proof, you’re going to love these mini cherry pies. Not only do they look gorgeous but they taste amazing too.

Does canned cherry pie filling need to be cooked?
Canned cherry pie fillings and most other canned pie fillings are ready to eat straight out of the tin. These canned fillings don’t have to be heated or cooked, but as with most pies, can taste better heated.
These heart-shaped cherry pies would be lovely for a Valentine’s Day dessert or even a tea party with the girls (I say tea party, but we usually drink Prosecco lol). They would also make a great gift for Mothers Day!
These filled Cherry pie love hearts, can be served hot from the oven with a little cream or custard. You can also make these in advance and serve at room temperature. Or pop them back in the oven to warm for a few minutes before serving.
How to Store Cherry Pies
Cherry pies can last up to 2 days if you store them at room temperature, if wrapped tightly with cling film. You can store in the fridge for up to 4 days. So if you’re making these for Valentine’s Day, you could save a few for National Cherry Pie Day, too. You can also store them in the freezer; just pop them into an airtight container first. They will last about 5 months frozen. When your ready for a cherry pie, place onto a baking tray. Bake in a preheated oven at 180°C for about 20-25 minutes. What cherries are good for pie?
Cherries are a great choice for pies because they are naturally sweet and tart, and they hold their shape when cooked. They also have a beautiful deep red color that makes for a stunning pie. When using cherries for pies, it is best to use fresh or frozen cherries. If using frozen cherries, make sure to thaw them before using. When using fresh cherries, make sure to pit them before adding them to the pie. Cherries pair well with other fruits, such as apples, peaches, and blueberries, and can be used in a variety of pies, such as cherry-apple, cherry-blueberry, and cherry-peach.
Cherry Pie Love Hearts
Ingredients
- 300 g Plain flour plus a little extra for rolling out the pastry
- ¼ Tbsp Salt
- 2 Tbsp Caster sugar
- 150 g Unsalted butter chilled
- 1 Large egg yolk
- 3-4 Tbsp Iced water
- 1 Tbsp Milk
- 410 g Cherry pie filling 1 tin
Instructions
To make the pie crust
- First, to make the pie crust, you’ll need to cut the chilled butter into small cubes.150 g Unsalted butter
- Grab yourself a large mixing bowl and sift the flour.300 g Plain flour
- Add in your butter cubes and using the tips of your fingers, rub the flour and butter together until you create a crumbly texture almost like bread crumbs.
- Now add in the salt and 2 tablespoons of caster sugar and give it a quick stir.¼ Tbsp Salt, 2 Tbsp Caster sugar
- Make a well in the center of the crumbled mixture and add in the yolk of one egg and add in the water.1 Large egg yolk, 3-4 Tbsp Iced water
- Using a spatula, work the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients, keep mixing until it forms a soft dough.
- Knead the dough a couple of times and flatten into a disk shape. Cover with clingfilm and chill for about an hour in the refrigerator.
- After the dough has been chilled, remove from the fridge, and set to one side to bring it back down to almost room temperature again.
- Preheat your oven to 180°C.
- Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper.
- Now divide the dough into two pieces; this makes it easier to roll.
How to make the mini Cherry pie hearts
- Dust a clean work surface and rolling pin.
- Roll out the dough and, using a heart-shaped cookie cutter start cutting out your hearts.
- Next, fill half your hearts with a little cherry pie filling making sure to keep it away from the edges.410 g Cherry pie filling
- Now place the other half of the hearts to the top of each cherry-filled heart. Using a fork press around the edges to crimp them together.
- Brush the top of the pies with a little milk and sprinkle with sugar.1 Tbsp Milk
- Place the pie into the center of your oven and bake for 20-25 minutes. The pie crust should look golden when its finished cooking.
