Porridge is a breakfast I grew up with. Back in the day, my mum always told us it was one of the healthiest breakfasts she could give us. As a result, that’s why I make it for my kids today, myself included. Plus, when it comes to porridge toppings sky’s the limit. Hence why I love to make porridge. Firstly, this perfect porridge is not only creamy, warming, and absolutely delicious; it’s so simple to make too. This is the base to most of my porridge recipes. You can flavor this porridge any way you wish. You can add spices such as cinnamon, allspice, or even ginger; experiment with your favorite flavors, and see where it takes you.
When it comes to choosing toppings, there are thousands of different ingredients that go perfectly with porridge. I add anything from syrups, and sliced fruit to granola and even compotes.
Why do you put salt in porridge?
Salt is a staple in all the best porridge recipes as it adds depth to the taste of the porridge. Salt will help bring out the sweetness of any topping you choose to use in your porridge recipes. Just make sure to add the salt when the porridge is nearly finished cooking or coming to a boil. Adding the salt too early can harden the grain, and stop the oats from swelling, making your porridge less creamy.
How to make porridge?
Measure out your ingredients and pop them into a small saucepan. Then simply bring to the boil and then let the porridge simmer for 3-4 minutes, keep stirring throughout the whole cooking process so that the porridge cooks evenly. When it is finished cooking remove it from the heat and let it stand for a minute. Grab yourself a bowl and fill it with the beautiful creamy porridge. It really is that simple to make delicious creamy porridge.
