Need buttermilk for your baking? Don’t you just hate it when you want to make a recipe, only to find out that there’s one ingredient missing? For me, buttermilk is quite often that ingredient. It’s not something most people have on hand very often, so being able to make your own buttermilk substitute is the way to go. This buttermilk recipe is great as you can make it with any type of dairy or dairy-free milk.
What is Buttermilk
Buttermilk is a tangy, fermented dairy beverage that has been around since the days of churning cream into butter. Today, store-bought buttermilk is made from milk with lactic acid-producing bacteria added to it, giving it its characteristic tart flavor, which is needed to make the best-baked goods such as scones, pancakes, breakfast muffins, and the list goes on.
Why do we use Buttermilk?
Buttermilk is such a versatile ingredient that can be used for a variety of recipes and dishes as mentioned above. It’s rich and creamy and adds a tangy flavor to whatever it’s added to. So put simply, the reason we use buttermilk is it’s the perfect way to add rich flavor and texture to your favorite recipes!
How to make Buttermilk
Making buttermilk is easy! All you need to do is add a tablespoon of lemon juice or white vinegar to a cup of milk and stir. Let the mixture sit for about five minutes and voila, you have buttermilk! Now you can use it to make pancakes, biscuits, and other delicious recipes.
Dessert recipes with Buttermilk
So many dessert recipes call for buttermilk that you’ll never be short of ideas of recipes to make. We made a collection of dessert recipes that call for buttermilk, from buttermilk donuts to buttermilk milk banana bread, click the link to check them out.
Can you freeze Buttermilk?
You bet! Buttermilk freezes like a dream, unlike other dairy products, which tend to get grainy after freezing buttermilk doesn’t. To make sure you get the best result, give it a stir and put it in ice cube trays by the tablespoon. Pop those cubes into a ziplock and you’re good to go! Buttermilk will last up to 12 months if frozen properly, but in all honesty, I think it’s best to use it within the first 3 to 4 months because it holds its flavor better.
Where to buy Buttermilk
Looking to buy buttermilk, your best bet is to head to the dairy section of your grocery store. If that doesn't have what you're looking for, consider checking with local dairies or farmer's markets, they might just have that traditional buttermilk you're after. But if all else fails you know how to make your own buttermilk substitute.
