What was the original martini?

The original martini was a mix of gin and sweet vermouth, served in a chilled glass with a lemon peel garnish. It first became popular in the late 19th century, and was traditionally served in a cocktail glass with a stemmed base. Over time, the recipe has changed to include vodka and other ingredients, such as dry vermouth, orange bitters, and olives. The modern martini is typically served straight up, with a lemon or olive garnish.
