- When it starts to boil stop stirring, you’ll need to boil your candy mix for about 8-10 minutes.
- To test if the candy is ready to coat your apples drop a few drops of boiling candy into a bowl of cold water, if the candy is still soft it needs another minute or two. If it’s hard to the touch your ready to start dipping your apples in the candy mix.
- When dipping your apples tilt the saucepan slightly this helps to coat the apples fully, be careful not to spill any hot candy on your skin as it can cause a nasty burn.
- If there is any left-over candy in the pan, grab a teaspoon and fill in the tops where the sticks go into the apples again to make sure there is no apple visible under your candy coating.

If there is one thing, I love about Halloween treats it’s got to be making this Candy apple recipe. I have eaten candy apples every year for as long as I can remember, it’s probably the reason I love them so much. Candy apples bring back so many fun memories, I hope that they will create fun memories for everyone I make them for too.
I loved making these candy apples, my kiddies thought they looked amazing on the Halloween party dessert table last year. Candy apples are always the Halloween treats to disappear from the table first. What can I say besides that they are such a fun classic dessert?
This candy apple recipe is so easy to make. Plus I know once you’ve made them once you’ll be making candy apples every year just like me. This is one of those Halloween treats that actually has something healthy in it, apples. Being one of your five a day and as a bonus candy apples take a long time to eat, so the kids end up eating a lot less candy at the end of the day.
Can I make candy apples without a thermometer?
Don’t worry if you don’t own a candy thermometer, I’ve never used mine for this candy apple recipe. Instead of a thermometer, you test the boiling candy mixture after about 15 minutes. Just place a drop of the candy mixture into a small bowl of cold water. When it’s ready the candy should harden into a brittle thread. When this happens take your saucepan off of the heat. Now start dipping and coating your Halloween candy apples.
How long do candy apples take to harden?
After you have finished dipping and coating all your candy apples, it should only take about ten minutes to fully harden and be ready to eat. If you live in a humid country it may take slightly longer, putting the apples in the fridge for ten minutes will speed it up. If you don’t plan on eating the candy apples on the same day wrap them with food-safe plastic wrap, to stop any damage to the candy apples such as cracking and bubbling.
What's the best apples to use for toffee apples?
I found that Granny smith apples are one of the best apples to use for this recipe. As they don’t cause bubbling once your toffee apples have been coated with the hot candy.
