Instructions
To make the chocolate cupcakes
- First preheat your oven to 170 Celsius or 340 degrees Fahrenheit , grab yourself a muffin tin and fill with 12 cupcake cases. Grab two mixing bowls, one for wet ingredients and one for dry ingredients.
- In one bowl add in the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, bicarbonate of soda and salt then give it a good mix making sure there are know big lump of cocoa powder.
- In the second mixing bowl add in the warm coffee, vinegar, olive oil, vanilla extract and 1 egg then whisk until all the ingredients are combined.
- Add the wet ingredients to the bowl of dry ingredients and whisk until all the ingredients are well combined and you have a runny batter like mixture (don't over mix).
- Divide the cupcake batter evenly between the 12 cupcake cases, fill each paper case 2/3 full, I use an ice cream scoop to make each portion even.
- Bake in the middle of your preheated oven for 20 minutes, to test if the cupcakes are cooked simply stick a wooden cocktail stick into the center of your cupcake, if it comes out clean its done if there is a little batter stuck to it, pop them back into your oven and bake for a couple more minutes.
- Once baked leave to cool for five minutes in their tin before transferring them to a wire rack to finish cooling.
To make the chocolate buttercream frosting.
- Into a large mixing bowl or stand mixer add in your butter (room temperature) and cream it for a few minutes using the paddle attachment or wooden spoon.
- While the butter is being creamed measure out and sieve your icing sugar and cocoa powder into a separate mixing bowl and set to one side.
- Next add in your vanilla extract and give it a quick mix.
- Add in your dry ingredients a little at a time and mix well. Continue mixing until the frosting is thick and creamy. Last but not least add in 1 tablespoon of milk and give it one more mix until it’s all incorporated.
How to make the Halloween spider decoration
- Using a palette knife add a little chocolate buttercream to the top of each cupcake, making sure to reach the edges and smooth it off, Set the cupcakes to side once you have finished frosting them all.
- Next open and scrape out the cream of 12 Oreo cookies, add the biscuit pieces into a zip lock bag and crush them with a rolling pin until they are in little crumbs and set to one side.

This Creepy crawly Spider cupcakes recipe is perfect for any Halloween dessert table. They are so simple to make, basically a kid friendly recipe. This is one of my absolute favorite Halloween cupcake recipes to date. Halloween cupcakes always disappear from the dessert table first, everyone seems to love them. The chocolate cupcake sponge itself tastes soft, moist and so chocolaty. Everyone loves this recipe as its quick and easy to make, you just need a whisk and a mixing bowl…. and obviously the spooky ingredients LOL.
October is one of my favorite months of the year, as the character Anne from the famous book Anne of Green Gables quoted “I’m so glad I live in a world where there are Octobers”. Its seriously the best month of the year. Not only is it Halloween, the autumn colors are just beautiful, oranges, reds and yellows, there’s pumpkin picking, hot chocolate to make, wearing cozy jumpers and thick socks. Plus parties with friends, scary movies and also its pizza month, you cant get much better than that.
When is Halloween?
Halloween of course is always on the 31st of October each year, this year 2024 it will fall on Thursday the 31st October 2024. Halloween day is also known as Hallows Eve its the day before All Hallows Day which is also known by most people as All Saints Day on the Christian calendar. The word Hallows comes from the old English language meaning “hallowed” which means “made holy” but now every knows this day as our Happy Halloween.
Halloween Cupcake Ideas
Halloween is such a fun time to experiment with your baking skills, I’ve made a selection of super easy and kid friendly Halloween cupcake decoration ideas, everything from spooky gravestones to zombie faces and a few more in between. Having a few delicious spooky cupcake options at your Halloween dessert table will have your friends and family wowed. I normally make two types of cupcake one using a chocolate sponge and the other using a vanilla and from there I add my toppings. All you need is icing, a little food coloring, candy and a few sprinkles. With these you can create your very own spin-chilling and spooky, but yet very delicious Halloween inspired desserts.
Halloween cupcakes with eyes!
Adding edible candy eyes to your Halloween cupcakes can be the perfect finishing touch to a spooky cupcake face. These candy eyes are brilliant as you can find them easily online, they also come in different sizes big and small. The small edible eyes are the ones I use for my cupcakes and the larger candy eyes are used for my bigger spooky celebration cakes. If your looking to make your own edible eyes you can use royal icing and then pipe a little dot of white onto a piece of parchment paper and leave them to dry overnight. The next day use black royal icing and make tiny black dots on the top of each white dot. Leave your diy eye balls to dry over night again and there you have it, your very own googly eyes ready to use on your spooky cupcakes.
