What is an Affogato coffee?

Affogato formally known as “Affogato al caffe” which in Italian translates to “drowned in coffee”. That pretty much sums up this coffee recipe. An Affogato coffee is an Italian coffee-based dessert that consists of a scoop of vanilla gelato (or ice cream) topped with a shot of hot espresso, and if your going Irish then a shot of Jameson’s Whiskey too. This combination creates a decadent, creamy, and strong treat for those who enjoy the intense flavor of coffee. Although unknown it looks like this delicious creamy coffee originated in Italy in the early 1950s and has since become one of the most popular coffees around the world.

How much is in a double shot of espresso?

A single shot of espresso is 40mls or 1.35 fl oz, each shot uses around 7 to 9 grams of finely ground coffee beans. A double shot of espresso is obviously double a single shot making it 80mls or 2.70 fl oz. In terms of caffeine content, a double shot contains about 80 -100 mg for a double shot.

Is Affogato hot or cold?

This recipe requires a boiling hot double shot of espresso poured over the top of a scoop or two of vanilla ice cream, the espresso slowly melts the ice cream forming a silky smooth luscious coffee drink or if your like me and can’t wait for it to melt you can eat it with a spoon as a dessert. Tips For Making The Best Affogato

Are you ready to make the best affogato gelato ever? Here are some tips that will impress your taste buds!

  • First things first, the gelato or ice cream to espresso ratio is crucial. You don’t want to overpower the delicate ice cream with too much coffee or vice versa. So, use one shot of espresso to one scoop of ice cream.
  • Don’t use diluted or watered-down coffee. Opt for a short and strong shot of espresso to make sure this dessert taste’s it’s best.
  • Next up, make sure your gelato is ice-cold. You want it to be soft enough to scoop but not too soft that it will melt when the hot coffee is poured over it. So, don’t leave it sitting out for too long, or you’ll end up with a soupy mess.
  • Feeling fancy? Add a shot of your favorite sprit or liqueur to your affogato! You could use rum, amaretto , or you could even add a coffee-based liqueur for an extra caffeine kick, we love to add a shot of Jameson’s whiskey to ours.
  • Want to add some extra pizzazz to your affogato? Try different toppings like chopped hazelnuts or raisins for a bit of texture. You could also sprinkle over some grated chocolate or syrup for a touch of sweetness.
  • Finally, the best serving glasses to use are small drinking glasses. They should be just big enough to hold the ice cream, so you get the perfect balance of coffee and gelato in every bite.
