Espresso with chocolate recipe

When it comes to brewing the perfect espresso, there are a few different ways to make it. The easiest way, of course, is to use a pod or capsule coffee machine such as a Nespresso machine. Then you have a bean-to-cup coffee machine where you add the beans or ground coffee to your coffee machine, select the style of coffee you would like, and let the coffee machine do the rest. For more of a barista style espresso, you may choose to do the hard work yourself. Ensuring each step of the coffee making process is done with perfection, from grinding your own coffee beans to tamping down the grounds and pulling the shot yourself using a fancy manual coffee machine like the ones you find in all the best coffee shops. Or if you don’t have the fancy tools mentioned above you may prefer to use a simple French press coffee pot.

How to make an espresso?

The method for making your own espresso from home can be done in three easy steps.

  1. First, weigh and grind your coffee beans until they’re a very fine powder. The average single shot of espresso uses around 6 to 8 grams of coffee.

  2. Next fill your portafilter and tamp your shot.

  3. Lastly, attach the portafilter to your coffee machine and pull your shot.

Coffee beans

Making your espresso this way will produce the best espresso possible. This is how you’ll see your espresso being made in any good coffee shop. Generally, coffee experts prefer to use manual coffee machines, because of the level of control they have for each step of the coffee-making process. But if you’re not a coffee expert and have no idea what a portafilter even is or how to tamper your own ground coffee beans, have no fear, there are other ways to pull a perfect shot of espresso.

How to make espresso shots at home?

You may have noticed above that in order to make the best espresso you would need a whole array of tools to complete just one cup of coffee.

Coffee Grinder

First, you need a coffee grinder. These come in both automatic and manual. With a manual grinder, you add in your coffee beans and turn a small handle, which slowly grinds your coffee. Or you could opt for a smart coffee grinder that can produce very fine to coarse coffee grounds; this will help give you consistent results when you grind.

Scales

Then you may have noticed that we mentioned that you need to weigh out your ground coffee. If you’re serious about getting your morning coffee right, this is a must. The average single shot of espresso uses around 6 to 8 grams of coffee grounds.

Portafilter

Also, you’ll want a portafilter. This is a device that looks a lot like a spoon with a chunky handle. A portafilter holds your weighed coffee grounds during the pulling of your espresso shot. If you purchase a manual coffee machine, it normally comes as part of the accessories.

Tamper

Last but not least, you’ll need a tamper. A tamper is used to apply pressure to the ground coffee beans in the portafilter. The goal of tamping your coffee beans is to provide a compact surface for the hot water to pass through. Not tamping your coffee grounds, before pulling your espresso, may result in the hot water flowing too quickly and making small holes in the coffee bed, making your espresso taste nasty.

How do you make espresso at home?

If using a manual coffee machine, where you need to grind, tamp and brew everything yourself sounds a little too much for you as a beginner, don’t worry as there is a whole range of automatic coffee machines to choose from. The next level down from the manual coffee machine is semi-automatic, where the machine will grind the coffee beans into the portafilter ready for you to tamper. You simply place it back into the coffee machine and it will finish the rest of the pulling and brewing process itself. Another great option is to go for a super-automatic coffee machine such as a Nespresso Vertuo coffee machine. Nespresso coffee machines use pre-made coffee capsules filled with fresh ground coffee to make their espressos. Super-automatic coffee machines produce amazing-tasting espresso with just a push of a button, giving consistently great results. If you’re looking for a simple way to make espressos, a capsule coffee machine might be the way to go.

How to make espresso with a French press?

For this method, you’ll need to have a French press also known as a cafetière or coffee press pot. It’s a coffee pot that has a piston-style plunger that uses pressure to force the ground coffee beans to the bottom of the pot while leaving a filtered, deep full flavored coffee at the top. You can produce a beautiful tasting cup of espresso in just a few easy steps.

  1. The first step is to place 2 tablespoons of medium-ground roasted coffee into the bottom of your French press pot.
  2. Then splash the ground coffee with a small amount of hot water (around 93°C or 200°F) and let the grounds hydrate for about 30 seconds before pouring the rest of the hot water in and stirring gently for a few seconds.
  3. Attach the lid to the French press, ensuring that the plunger is set to the top of the pot, just above the water.

  4. Allow your coffee to steep for around 3- 4 minutes for optimal flavor.

  5. Once your coffee has steeped, slowly apply an even presser to the plunger so that it goes all the way to the bottom of the pot.

  6. For the final step, leave the plunger at the bottom of the coffee press and pour yourself an espresso to be proud of.

Can you make espresso with instant coffee?

The simple answer is yes, but it won't have the same deep, rich and strong flavor that a true espresso would have. You'll find a choice of instant espresso coffees at most big supermarkets. Most brands use the same method to make their espressos, which is to add a teaspoon of coffee with hot water and stir, that's it. I personally wouldn't recommend instant coffee for espresso. The best things in life aren't easy, and espresso should always be made with a little bit of love.

What's the difference between espresso and coffee?

Espresso is served in a tiny cup. Each shot of espresso is around 30 milliliters or 1 ounce and contains about 63 mg of caffeine. Whereas a regular cup of coffee contains between 12 -16 mg of caffeine per 30 milliliters or 1 ounce. In contrast to the two types of coffee, you can see that the espresso holds more caffeine, which gives it a stronger more intense flavor and thicker texture that we all love.

What are the benefits of drinking espresso?

Did you know that drinking espresso has many health benefits? This tiny coffee contains antioxidants that may help boost your immune system. Boost your energy levels, support heart health, support brain health, and has even been linked to lowering the risk of type 2 diabetes. But please note that even though drinking coffee has its benefits, some people may need to limit their intake, including those who are pregnant or breastfeeding, children and adolescents, and those with certain health conditions.
