We all know Valentine's Day is known as the day of love and romance. But how did it all start? The true origin is a bit of a mystery. Historians have dated the celebrations back to ancient Rome, with the Roman festival of Lupercalia, held in mid-February to celebrate the coming of spring and fertility rites. It's said that in the 5th century, Pope Gelasius I banned the festival and replaced it with St. Valentine's Day, though the origin of the holiday is still unclear. What we do know is that it wasn't until the 14th century that people started celebrating it as a romantic holiday of love.
