Double chocolate frosted donuts

When it comes to indulgent desserts, few can rival the allure of a perfectly fried, double chocolate frosted donut. This recipe yields donuts that are light, airy, and irresistibly decadent, with a sticky chocolate glaze that elevates them to the realm of true dessert perfection. Whether you spell it “doughnut” or “donut,” there’s no denying the global appeal of these sweet treats, and this week, I set out to create the ultimate version.

Double chocolate frosted donuts

In my quest for the perfect fried donut recipe, I found myself caught between two schools of thought: yeast donuts versus cake donuts. The debate was nearly split down the middle. In an attempt to make an informed decision, I turned to Krispy Kreme, renowned for their melt-in-your-mouth donuts. While the brand does offer yeast-free cake donuts, the majority of their offerings are made with a yeast-raised dough—a strong vote in favor of yeast donuts. Armed with this knowledge, I chose to craft my double chocolate frosted version using a yeast-based recipe.

However, the allure of a yeast-free cake donut remains, and I’m eager to test it for myself in the future to see which one truly reigns supreme.

To cook your donuts, you’ll need a pot of oil—or, for the most consistent and safest results, a deep fryer. I recommend the deep fryer for its ability to maintain a steady oil temperature, ensuring each batch is flawless. Deep fryers also come with built-in safety features like frying baskets, lids, and cool-touch handles, making them a much safer option than using a simple pot. The basket allows you to lower the donut rings into the hot oil with precision, avoiding dangerous splashes that could cause serious burns.

Whichever method you choose, these double chocolate frosted donuts are sure to become your new favorite indulgence.

The History of the Donut

A sweet piece of history accompanies every bite of a donut. The donut as we know it has roots tracing back to the Dutch settlers who brought their culinary traditions to New York, then known as New Amsterdam. The Dutch referred to their fried dough cakes as olykoeks, or “oily cakes.” While these treats were beloved in their homeland, it’s easy to see why the name was soon adapted to “donut”—after all, oily cake hardly evokes the same appetizing image.

Today, these humble pastries are enjoyed worldwide, their evolution from olykoeks to the iconic donut a testament to their enduring popularity.

Living in a place where Krispy Kreme or Dunkin’ Donuts are nowhere to be found, I’ve learned to rely on my own kitchen when the craving for a delicious, melt-in-your-mouth donut strikes. Over the past few weeks, I’ve spent countless hours perfecting my homemade donut recipes, experimenting with toppings and flavors. Frankly, I’ve made so many that I could probably open my own donut shop—complete with a delivery service, no less. The beauty of making your own donuts is that the possibilities are endless, and there’s something incredibly satisfying about enjoying a warm, freshly made donut from the comfort of your home.

Essential Equipment for Making Donuts

Making homemade fried donuts doesn’t require a specialized donut maker or a fancy cutter. In fact, you can easily use two different-sized cutters from your kitchen arsenal. If you’re lacking a small round cutter for the donut holes, a simple bottle cap can serve as a perfect substitute, offering just the right size for those delightful little centers.

That said, if you’re in the market for a dedicated donut cutter, this one available on Amazon offers both great value and excellent reviews—an ideal choice for anyone looking to streamline their donut-making process.

What's in Chocolate Donut Glaze?

Crafting a rich chocolate glaze for your donuts is surprisingly simple. The base of most chocolate glazes consists of powdered sugar, cocoa powder, vanilla extract, and milk. While some recipes call for melted chocolate, this particular double chocolate frosted donut recipe opts for cocoa powder, giving it that familiar, deeply satisfying flavor.

To prepare the glaze, simply combine the ingredients in a bowl or mixer and blend until smooth and well incorporated. Once your glaze is ready, take your freshly fried donuts and dip them halfway into the velvety chocolate mixture. For that extra touch of indulgence, drizzle melted white chocolate over the glaze, creating the perfect double chocolate frosted donut that’s sure to impress.
