Where Do Crepes Come From?

Crepes are a delicious and versatile treat that originated in France. According to popular belief, the origin of crepes can be traced back to a fortuitous incident that occurred in the 13th century in Brittany. As the story goes, a housewife was cooking buckwheat porridge over an open fire when she accidentally spilled some of it onto a flat cooking stone nearby. To her surprise, the spilled batter cooked quickly and formed a thin, delicate pancake. This serendipitous discovery led to the creation of what we now know as crepes.

Types Of Crepes

There is a variety of types and styles of crepes available, including Plain crepes, Galette de Sarrasin (Buckwheat flour Crepes), and Russian Blini. Preparation for each type of crepe may vary based on the ingredients used, such as grains and fillings but generally involve mixing together dry and wet ingredients into a thin crepe batter. The batter is then cooked in some form of pan over low-medium heat until golden brown in color. The traditional French way of preparing crepes requires pouring the batter onto a heated cast iron skillet. Once it starts to bubble up on one side, turn it over with a spatula to cook evenly on both sides before filling it with desired toppings and sauces for serving.

What's the difference between a crepe and a pancake?

It’s an age-old debate that has been going on for years! Both crepes and American pancakes have their own unique flavor and texture, but what really sets them apart? Crepes are thin circular pancakes made from a light batter of eggs, milk, butter, and flour, typically served with various toppings like fruits or whipped cream. Pancakes are made from a more dense batter containing baking powder or baking soda, giving them a thicker and fluffier texture. Both can be served sweet or savory depending on the type of filling you choose to include.

What is a crepe pan?

A crepe pan is a fun piece of cooking equipment fit for any kitchen. Unlike a conventional flat surface, it features a shallow surface with low sides, which allows cooked crepes to easily slide off the pan after they are ready. The bent edge around the circumference of the pan allows for easy flipping of the crepes while cooking them evenly on both sides – no more unevenly cooked crepe batter! This versatile tool can be used not only for a sweet and savory traditional French crepe but also for blintzes, omelets, pancakes, and even Quiche Lorraine. Regardless of what kind of food you plan on making in your crepe pan, you will be able to make tasty delicacies with ease.
