A delicious BLT sandwich for lunch is one of those recipes that must be done right. Have you ever had a ready-made bacon, lettuce and tomato sandwich form a supermarket and been completely disappointed with the floppy lettuce, soggy slices of tomato and the lack of taste from the bacon. Well, I’m here to show you how easy it is to get the perfect BLT sandwich every time, by making your BLT from scratch at home.
How should I cook my bacon?
I find that pan frying the bacon rashers is the best way to achieve the perfect taste for this kind of sandwich. Add a table spoon of olive oil into your frying pan and three thick rashers of your favorite bacon. I absolutely love the maple cured bacon at the moment. Using a rasher with a bit of flavor such as smoked bacon is great. Simply fry it in your pan over a medium heat, turning over half way through cooking and your done with your bacon.
What can I use instead of mayonnaise?
If you don’t like the taste of mayonnaise sauce, you might prefer to add in some thin slices of avocado instead. Avocados are lovely as they have that creamy dense texture which is similar to mayo. Another great addition to a BLT sandwich is a table spoon of green pesto, it’s so yummy. Pesto is a paste-like sauce made with basil, garlic, cheese pine nuts and olive oil; it will give your BLT sandwich an extra kick of flavor.
Healthier ways to cook bacon
If your looking to make a healthier bacon sandwich with less fat, or simply don’t want to fry your food in oil, you can use a health grill instead. After having my first daughter and piling on the pounds, I grilled a lot of my food to save myself the calories. Its a brilliant way to loss weight and not have to give up your favorite dishes. Instead of using the normal bacon rashers with the fat streaks still on them, I find the medallion cuts of bacon have a lot less fat. - 1 Tbsp Oil
- 2 Slices Bread
- 3 Bacon Rashers I used maple cured bacon rashers
- 2 Piece Lettuce leaves Chopped, I used iceberg lettuce
- 1 Medium Tomato Sliced
- 1 Tbsp Mayonnaise
- 1 Tbsp Butter Optional
Instructions
Cooking the bacon
- First, add a tablespoon of olive oil to a frying pan.1 Tbsp Oil
- Add your 3 rashers of bacon to the pan and cook over a medium heat for about 8-10 minutes, turning over halfway.3 Bacon Rashers
- Once the bacon is cooked drain any excess oil and set to one side.
How to make a BLT
- If you like your BLT bread toasted, pop it in the toaster (I like mine not toasted)2 Slices Bread
- Butter your bread or toast (this is optional)1 Tbsp Butter
- Add in a layer of sliced lettuce and tomatoes onto one slice of your bread.2 Piece Lettuce leaves, 1 Medium Tomato
- Place your cooked bacon across your lettuce and tomato slices.
- Add in a little mayonnaise and top with your second slice of bread. There you have it, the ever popular BLT, enjoy.1 Tbsp Mayonnaise

I never had a BLT before. Is it better to pan fry the bacon or oven cook it?
Oven or fried bacon comes down to personal choice, I think personally oven bacon is nicer in a BLT sandwich as you don’t get that oily taste from the frying pan. I think oven cooked bacon has less calories as well as you don’t need to add any oil to cook it. A great alternative to both is to grill your bacon, I love the Tefal OptiGrill as its fast and easy and no need to use oil.
